Johnny Cash

I just found a story online about how the San Antonio Parks department wont sell the first wife of Johnny Cash a bench that he carved their names on in 1951. Instead they are removing it from the Riverwalk in fear of it being stolen.

Two things:

1) Had I know about this bench I would have gone to take a picture of it (I am a Johnny Cash Fan).

2) They should just give her the damn thing, the city is saying they cant because it is a piece of history, however until they found out it was Johnny Cash that did the carving no one cared.

I would not be surprised to see the damn thing on e-bay soon, San Antonio is full of corrupt politicians who are looking to make a quick buck, and don’t even get me started on the Historical Society.

Fedora Core 2 FTP server Online

Fedora

With the WoW Beta being down this weekend (See the post below!) I have had some extra time on my hands (damn seeing that in writing makes me feel like such a geek) so I decided to reinstall my file server at my apartment with Fedora Core 2.

I had been running a copy of Windows 2003 server on it, however when I did the last security update it also locked the OS down because it was an unregistered version, so rather than fighting with the OS to get it back up I decided to re-install the server with Linux. It has been a while since I have really played with Linux so I was looking forward to getting my basics back.

After looking at various distros online I decided to go with Fedora Core 2, it picks up where Red Hat Linux 9 left off (From what I understand) and best of all it’s 100% free! I got an iso from http://fedora.lsu.edu/install.php that would allow me to install the OS over the net which I think is a really cool feature that Linux offers, sure you can do it with Windows however who wants to mess with the pain of setting up a server just for that.

After downloading the 4meg file from http://fedora.lsu.edu/install.php and burning it to CD I placed it in the cdrom of my file server, rebooted and was off! The cd booted right up and after entering a few parameters for the install I had the OS installed in about 30 minutes. Once X was up and running I noticed that there were over 200 updates for the OS and this is the only place I ran into problems. Up2date (the Linux updater) would not run correctly from the GUI, it would only download about 5 updates and then freeze. I got around this by using SSH to run up2date from the command line (from my other desktop) and everything worked fine. Fedora is very user-friendly and if it was not for so many popular software compatibility issues I think that is would really give Windows a run for it’s money.

The primary purpose of my file server it to backup the content of this website and the files on my main computer. I am in no way a Linux admin so the FTP server cannot be reached from outside of my home network, however this is a great way to backup all of my files for free.

“Page View” option not working in Internet Explorer

On more than one occasion I have wanted to view the source code of a webpage for various reasons and had Internet Explorer be very uncooperative when trying to do so. I would right click my mouse on the page I wanted to view the source for, go to the “View Source” option and nothing would happen, normally I would be greeted with a Notepad window displaying the html source code of the page.

I always took this in stride and just used a different browser like Mozilla to view the source thinking that it was just some IE bug. Well this happed to me a few days ago again and this time I wanted to find out what was going on. It turns out that IE (Internet Explorer) will not display the source of a page if the temporary internet files folder is full and it will NOT tell you when it is at the limit. There are two easy ways to fix this:

Delete the temporary internet files by doing the following:

Go to the “Tools” menu in IE
Select “Internet Options”
Click on the “Delete Files…” button in the Temporary Internet Files section of the window that loads.
This will delete all files from the temporary internet files folder.

Another way to fix this problem is to simply increase the amount of space you allot to the Temporary Internet Filed on your computer. You can do this by going to “Tools” menu in IE, selecting “Internet Options” and then clicking on the “Settings…” button under the Temporary Internet Files section of the window. Here you will find a slider bar that will allow you to set the amount of disk space you want IE to use for temporary internet files. I recommend just deleting the files, however you may for some reason want to keep them.

Immense on his Saber

The World of Warcraft closed beta servers went down for the last time on Friday the 29th, Blizzard is going to be conducting a stress test on them soon and then it’s onto release!! All of the closed beta testers will be reunited one last time with the characters we worked so hard on during the Stress test and then we get to start all over again at release!

There is no word as to when the stress test will start, and we (the WoW community) still don’t know if the upcoming stress test and open beta are one in the same, my guess is that they are. The day before the servers went down in preparation for the stress test I hit level 40 and was able to buy my in game mount – It was a black panther/Saber which I feel is very suiting for a Night Elf Rogue (The class and profession of my character). Check out the screen shots of my mount and the end of closed beta celebrations below!

Well I finally buckled this weekend and bought a Playstation 2, the temptation to play GTA San Andres (And other games) was just too much to bear any more. I got my system at Costco and it came with 2 games (Some ATV game and an Adventure game), the network adapter, a memory card, and an extra dual shock controller for only $209.00. I got my copy of GTA San Andres from Game Stop for $44.00, and am currently on the market for a mod chip, anyone with any suggestions on what modchip to use please post a comment or email me!

Jay-Z

I am a huge fan of rapper Jay-Z, in my opinion he is by far the best rapper alive – The Black Album is what real rap sounds like, you don’t hear a whole lot about “Bitches” and “Hoes” he tells his story of growing up poor and how he became the head of black music. I found out yesterday that he (Jay-Z) is going to release a movie that will feature his farewell concert at Madison Square Garden and some behind the scene footage of the making of The Black Album, Fade to Black (the name of the movie) will debut in November, watch the trailer below for a sample.

Jeep: 1 Monitor: 0

I got home from the beach a few hours ago – I am beat… The sun really does take a lot out of you and the fact that I had to go clean the jeep as soon as I got back (both the interior and exterior) did not help. I went down Saturday and spent the night on the beach with a buddy of mine, I got to test the new tent and some other camping supplies I got, and best of we got to take the jeep off road.

I always thought that the sand past the giant “Four wheel drive vehicles only past this point” sign was 3 feet deep and full of some of the most nasty debris that you can imagine – I was wrong.. We saw MANY two wheel drive vehicles (Even some cars) well into 15 miles down the beach, which is about 10 miles past the sign. But after that the terrain gets nasty in some parts, we saw a bronco that was stuck and a few other trucks that were having some trouble. The goal of our trip was to reach the very end of the Padre Island National Sea Shore – 65 miles of sand and debris.

We made it to the end of the beach in about 1 ½ hours which is roughly 50% of the time it is suppose to take, I attribute the fast time to well packed sand and me speeding :-) The speed limit past the 10 mile marker is 25, I would say that our average speed was in the 40’s. At first I was only doing 25 and then Jeep Cherokee whizzed by me doing about 60, after that I put the pedal to the floor.

By the time we reached the end of the island it was dark and we still had to setup camp, I had a new tent that I had never used before but it turned out to be a cinch to setup and camp was up in less than an hour, fire pit and all. I really wanted to fish and was only able to catch one huge mullet at night with the cast net so I used it for cut bait – I did not catch a damn thing all night.. We stayed up messing with the fire and chatting off and on with some drunk guy that was trying to get a signal on his cell phone and had lost his sister in law and sister somewhere on the beach. We went to bed at about 3am and at around 4:30 I woke up to the sound of a coyote eating the mullet I was using for bait outside out tent, he took off when I woke up and I realized that it had gotten really cold. The fire went out already so I just headed back to bed and got back up an hour later.

In the morning I caught some live bait and cast 2 lined into the Mansfield cut, before long I caught what would be my only catch – a Spanish Mackerel which I did not keep. We headed back to the city at about noon, ate some lunch and then came home.

All in all this was a great trip, I would have liked to use the 4X4 on the jeep more, and the fishing could have been better but I really had a great time..

Beach going tips:

Sand WILL get everywhere
Bring lots of food and water
Bring lots of Ice
Take Extra gas
Sand sucks when it’s in your pants, sleeping bag, and all over your pillow

Ever since I have made this site public this has been my most popular file by far I get requests for it all of the time when the site is offline, so back by popular demand: The Tennis Ball Mortar

We made the mortar with the instructions in the book “Backyard Ballistics, there are a ton of great projects that you can take on in this book, I highly recommend it for anyone that likes to see things explode.

I had ear surgery on 9/22/04, my last one! I have some wicked stitches behind my left ear but other than that the operation was painless! Strange how they can cut my ear off and when I wake up I feel little to no pain..

I also got an invite into the World Of Warcraft closed Beta! Oh joy! After playing the stress test I just about could not live without the game.. Which is by FAR the best MMORPG game ever made – even in it’s beta state! I got my invite from the Nzone.com promo – they were giving away 1000 accounts and I got “Lucky” :-)

I have some pics of my Jeep after a 4×4 excursion this weekend that I will post later!
